Leaves and Stems:

Mache/Lamb's Lettuce - (Valerianella locusta)

Country of Origin:

Originally from the Mediterranean, most come from California

Peak Season:

April through September

Usage:

Māche is a little, low lying plant that produces soft and tender spoon or tongue shaped leaves. They are very similar in looks to Johnny Jump ups.

Māche has a sweet and almost buttery flavor. They go well with a light vinaigrette such as raspberry and walnut oil. They are also very good with grilled lamb salads, and can be lightly sauteed.
