Exotic Fruits:

Longan (Euphoria longana L. or Dimocarpus longan)

State or Country of Origin

Thailand, Southeast Asia, India, and

Hawaii

Peak Season:

Available June to August

Handling Tips and General Information:

Grown extensively in the northern part of Thailand, especially in the
Chiang Mai area, the longan is much esteemed by fruit lovers, who eagerly await the annual high season from June to August when piles of the small brown fruit can be found in markets throughout the country. The crisp skin is easy to remove and the white flesh has a texture and sweetness reminiscent of litchi. It's best to eat longan fresh at room temperature, but the canned fruit is often served over ice as a dessert.

Longans are excellent sources of vitamin C. One cup of longans is approx. 120 calories.  Twenty longans yields about 1 cup peeled seeded fruit.

Poach longans in a light sugar syrup and serve over ice cream.
