In the early 1900's by Elizabeth White and Dr. Frederick Coville domesticate the wild
highbush blueberry which resulted in today's cultivated blueberry industry. Blueberries
come in two types, the smaller, and in some opinion, the better of the two, the wild
blueberry found in Maine and Northeastern Canada, and the larger, cultivated blueberry
found in Michigan, Indiana, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, North Carolina and
Chile. The blueberry of the genus Vaccinium, is a native American species. Early
settlers cherished the wild blueberry fruit as a staple ingredient in foods and
medicines. They incorporated the berries into their diets, eating them fresh off the
bush and adding them to soups, stews, and many other foods. North America is the
world's leading blueberry producer, accounting for nearly 90% of world production at the
present time. The North American harvest runs from mid-April through early October,
with peak harvest in July which is also known as National Blueberry Month.
Blueberries are loaded with anthocyanins, and have
loads of vitamin C, and
potent anti-oxidents.
Blueberries come in various retail packs: including 1/2 pints, pints, quarts,
six-pint packs and five- and ten-pound bulk consumer packages.
