CITING LIBRARY SUBSCRIPTION DATABASES

MLA STYLE

The following guidelines are taken from Joseph Gibaldi’s MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 6^th ed. (available in the campus libraries). Additional information may be found at the MLA website: http://www.mla.org/style.

GENERAL FORMAT  (MLA 5.9.7)

1.       Follow the rules for citing a print copy of your source. Omit data not given by the database.

2.       Complete the citation by providing the following:

a.       Database name (underlined)

b.       Name of the service

c.        Name of the library or library system (with a city, a state abbreviation, or both if useful).
Example: Metropolitan Community Coll. Lib., Omaha, NE.

d.       Access date (date you retrieved the article)

e.       URL of the service’s home page, if known (enclosed in angle brackets)

BOOK  (MLA 5.6)

 

Author. Title of Book. City of publication: Publisher, year of publication. Database name. Name of service. Library name. Access date <URL>.

JOURNAL ARTICLE  (MLA 5.7.1 – 4)

 

Author. “Article Title.” Journal Title Volume Number (Year): Page numbers. Database name. Name of service. Library name. Access date <URL>.

NOTE: If the database provides only the starting page number, give the number followed by a hyphen, a space, and a period: 19- .

NEWSPAPER ARTICLE  (MLA 5.7.5)

Author. “Article Title.” Newspaper Title  Date, edition [if given], Section/part number [if given]: Page numbers. Database name. Name of service. Library name. Access date <URL>.

NOTE: If the database provides only the starting page number, give the number followed by a hyphen, a space, and a period: 19- .

 

MAGAZINE ARTICLE  (MLA 5.7.6)

Author. “Article Title.” Magazine Title Date: Page numbers. Database name. Name of service. Library name. Access date <URL>.
