English Computer Classrooms (ECC) Home
Some of the English Computer Classrooms are also used as Writing Centers. Except during hours as Writing Centers, the ECC's are reserved for students enrolled in Metro English courses. They are open to you only during scheduled class meetings; they are not walk-in labs. Your instructor must be present at all times while you use the computers. Please observe the general Metro facilities policies about children on campus and about food and drink in classrooms.
To be able to use network capabilities or to print from any of the applications, the ECC computers each make a connection to a network server. This connection is made through your student logon and password.
Each time you begin to use a computer, you must fill in the logon screen, inserting your individual logon, password and domain. For help logging on, ask your instructor. If you still cannot log on, check with an Academic Resource Center staff member to see that you have the correct information.
For security, the ECC monitors have been set to show a passworded screensaver and to restart within one half hour of not being used.To unlock the screensaver, use your student password.
After you finish your work at the computer, click Start, then Log Off. You may also go to Start, Turn Off Computer, then Turn Off or Restart.
We recommend you buy an 3.5" IBM preformatted disk or a flash drive which you should bring to every class meeting. To conserve hard disk space and to keep your work portable, you will save most individual writing you produce to your own storage drive, not to the computers hard drive. Special chips that return each computer's settings to their original configuration have been installed on all machines. This means any work saved to "My Documents" or elsewhere to a hard drive will be erased when the computer is restarted.
Consider carrying your disk in a hard plastic case or other protective container. Please label your disk with your name, section number and instructor's name. Disks and flash drives left in the classroom will be placed on the whiteboard rail.
Saving Work to Open in Your Own Word Processor: If the writing software you use outside of Metro is not MS Word, you might not be able to open files. You may be required to write while at school, but you want to work further on your documents at home. At both places, save your work as .RTF (Rich Text Format) or as .TXT (Text). (Disks formatted for Macintosh computers or for portable word processors will not work in the ECC machines.)
Anti-virus software is installed on all MCC computers. If, while working in the classroom, you receive a warning that your diskette is infected, you can use the virus tools under My Computer or you can take the disk to an Academic Resource Center to clean it. Please restart the computer you have been working on.
For security, the ECC monitors have been set to show a passworded screensaver and to restart within one half hour of not being used.To unlock the screensaver, use your student password. After you have finished your work, remember to log off the computer.
ECC machines have software--Windows XP, the Office 2003 Suite, SkillsBank, and Internet Explorer--that should be adequate for use in completing the majority of English course assignments. College policy requires that software loaded to college computing resources be approved and registered: "Software licenses not supplied by or purchased through Information Technology Network Services (ITNS) require registration with ITNS. Registration consists of presenting the original or a copy of the software agreement for inclusion in the software files."
If you've a documented need for special settings or software on a machine, please speak to your instructor who will contact the ECC Coordinator.
Printing Limits
and Troubleshooting
Printed or copied documents should be in fulfillment of English course assignments, and documents should not exceed 20 pages.
Limit Multiple Copies. Resetting printer options to produce more than one copy of your work is costly and often delays printing for other people. Please use a photocopier for multiple copies.
Limit Pages from the Internet. Please assess the value of the information and estimate the approximate length of documents you are considering printing. Take notes or write down the URL so you can revisit the site when you have time to evaluate its content.
If your document fails to print, do not hit the print button repeatedly! First, check the printer to see that it shows no error messages and that there is paper in the machine.
If you experience other hardware or software problems, do not panic or give up on the work you are trying to do. Instead, report the situation to your instructor. For immediate assistance, instructors should call the Helpdesk at 457-2900. Then use paper and pencil or devise another way to make progress on the writing task.
