THEME: ART AS
INTUITION-EXPRESSION and
ART AS SYMBOLISM
QUESTION
A: What does Croce mean when he says that art
is intuition-expression?
ASSIGNMENT
A:
Read in the Alperson text
Croce:"Intuition,Technique,
and the Classification of the Arts" (pp.40-50) and
read in the Cooper text the entries under
"Croce"
(pp.96-99) and "Expression" (pp.144-148).
Croce's essay is difficult so do the best you can with
the
questions below. First, a bit of a summary. Intuition is
a kind of knowing which does not use logical concepts and
which cannot be equated with simple sensation. In the
process
of intuiting there is simultaneously a forming ("to
intuit is
to express" p.44). Thus the real art is in the mind
in this
creative act of intuition-expression and not in the
physical
work of art which is understood as craft.

Croce:

America: Influence, Misunderstanding, and Neglect." ]
1. Explain as best you can in your own
words what Croce means
by art as intuition-expression.
2. Do you agree or disagree that art is in
the mind and not
primarily in the physical work of art. Explain briefly
why
you agree or disagree.
3. Briefly, compare Croce either to Bell
or Kandinsky. Are there
any significant differences?
QUESTION
B:
How do we know what is symbolized in a painting or
an image?
ASSIGNMENT
B:
Read in the Alperson text Beardsley:
"Symbolism"
(pp.146-151) and read also in the Cooper text the
entry "symbolism" (pp.412-414).
1.
According to Beardsley, how should we go about
determining
whether an object in a painting or an image is a symbol
or
not? Explain briefly.
2. Click on the Titian link below and view the
reproduction
of Titian's painting titled Madonna with saints and
members
of the Pesaro family. Interpret at least one significant
symbol
in the painting.
