While we've been responding to questions about a text
(Roethke's poem), students
in the electronic imaging section have been responding to
questions about seeing an
image (reproductions of Cezanne and Kandinsky on the
Internet). The images to
which they responded can be found at the following
Internet sites:
Cezanne -
http://hops.cs.jhu.edu/~baker/cezanne.html
Kandinsky -
http://www.oir.ucf.edu/wm/paint/auth/kandinsky
Look up Cezanne and Kandinsky at ArtLex : A
Dictionary of Visual Art Terminology (this is an
excellent resource for all our terms)
Before we examine their responses at the FTP site, we
must read Rudolf Arnheim's
"Art and Thought" (pp. 157-170 in the Alperson
text) and the entry "Perception" (pp.
317-320 in the Cooper text) as well as the entry
"Form" (pp. 158-162 also in
Cooper).

** Assignment B is to discuss with one
another (after Wed) not only the
responses which have been posted but also to discuss the
following questions:
1) Does reading a text involve a different
process of interpretation than seeing an
image? How are they different, if at all?
2) If there is a difference, does it
matter?
Students should begin preliminary considerations for
their
collaborative projects. See Week 10 for details and
guidelines.
Philosophy students will need to select a partner in the
EIG section
with whom they can work in order to complete the joint
project.
Once partners have been chosen, you should begin
preliminary
discussions about theme, articulation, conception, and
feeling
as soon as you can. Please e-mail Gary and I about who
your
partner choices and your choices of possible themes.
