Week 10
Image-Word The
Collaborative Word-Image
Project
In this project each
of you will team up with one student from the other section of
the class. Students from the philosophy/humanities side of
the class will be responsible for the "word" or
"text" aspects of the project and the students from the
electronic imaging side of the class will be responsilble for the
"image" aspects of the project. [ By this time,
all students should be in teams of twos and have already had
prelimiary discussions about theme, articulation ( how
image and word will be used in relation to each other ),
overall conception of the project, and the mood or
feeling that your project will convey.]
Purpose
of the Project
The purpose is for two students -- one from each side of
the course -- to work together to produce an
"electronic collage" that combines word and image in
creative, original ways.
Some
General Ways to Relate Word and Image
1. Both of you work creatively -- one of you
uses the word creatively ( ex: you write your own poem about the
theme which you have both selected and your partner creates
an original image (or sequence of images) about the same theme.
Of course, before
each of you gets started, you should go through a preliminary
discussion together of
theme, articulation, conception, and feeling.
2. One of you works creatively and the other
works in a more supportive role. For example, the student
from the philosophy side may want to write an original poem
or short story and the student in electronic imaging may want to
produce an image or
sequence of images which illustrates, shows, or translates the
sense of the poem or short
story in images. Or the other way around: the image could be the
creative center
of the project and the words could be used to articulate or show
the sense of the image.
3. The image could be related to the theme in a
positive way whereas the word could be used in an ironic way
undercutting the meaning of the image. Or vice versa.
Some
Suggestions for Themes
1. Use the Vietnam war or the Desert Storm war as a
theme.
2. Use "Art Today in America" as a theme
3. Use multiculturalism or diversity as a theme.
Keep
a Record of the Development of your Project
We suggest a small notebook ( or a small journal ) in
which you keep a record of the
the theme and the preliminary discussions you have with your
partner. In addition, you
must record all the changes that the project undergoes whether
the changes are con-
ceptual or emotional.
If you have questions, don't hesitate to e-mail Gary or me.
All projects must be uploaded to
our FTP site by the last day of classes.
