101 Inroduction to Philosophy Group Writing Projects Starting your research |
One way to start
researching your topic is to think of all the ways the topic may
be listed. For example, our first topic of objective versus
relative truth may be found under the categories of objectivism
and relativism. But you may also find more if you use the
variation absolutism and relativism, or universalism and
relativism, or absolutism and subjectivism. Some search engines
like Excite will give you a list of terms
closely associated with the topic you have typed in the search
box.Yahoo! is good for categories. Scroll
down the front page and you'll see Arts and Humanities listed as a category. Click on Arts and Humanities and you'll get another menu
which lists Humanities; click on that and you'll get a
menu that includes Philosophy.Be sure to save or bookmark any
sites or links so that you can return to them in order to examine
and evaluate them more carefully later.
One good way to start is by using Hippias which is a philosophy search
engine. For example, if you type the term 'relativism' into the
search box, you'll get a list of 358 links -- all in philosophy
in varying ways.
You may also wish to use the Philosophy
Resources Page
which is part of our philosophy web site here at MCC.
There is also a good Resources
Page which is part of the Communications
and Humanities Division web site which includes among other things
links on how to evaluate information on the web, search engines,
libraries, and periodicals.
Here are four of the best guides (sites that sort, categorize,
and list other philosophy sites and links) for
philosophy research:
