The Kool-Aid Wino
An Essay by Anna Liebers

When I think of the title "Kool-Aid Wino," I think of someone or some child that more or less is addicted to Kool-Aid. He drinks Kool-Aid all the time. Kool-aid is all that interests him; he doesn't want to do anything else but have a glass in hand.

It could be someone or a child that has that famous Kool-Aid stain smile. Maybe he could be addicted to sugar by way of Kool-Aid. Maybe he just loves the Kool-Aid flavors, and does not want to drink anything else. For some reason the Kool-Aid is very special to him, it could be his escape from his everyday life, or the highlight of his day.

I feel that the boy/person referred to as the 'Kool-Aid wino' is a positive character. I am taking the position of a young man living close to this boy/person as, lets say, a neighbor.

This story is a sad story to me because of the poorness of the family. They could not afford medical treatment for the boy/person, nor proper bedding, not even a cup of sugar for his Kool-Aid.

However, the boy/person took what he had)with his environment, and made the best out of them. I gathered that he seemed to find some sort of joy in the kool-aid ceremony. He was never complaining about his rupture, his home, or his breakfast. He seemed to have only one thing on his mind, the Kool-Aid.

Once the Kool-Aid was purchased the boy/person 'led the way across the field' back to his home. He sounded eager and anxious to get home just to make his Kool-Aid ceremony which was 'performed in an exact manner and with dignity'. So he took care and pride in what he was doing.

He was being positive about his ceremony, he was happy to have the Kool-Aid, even without the sugar, or diluted. He put it above doing the dishes, above his mother's command, and careful not to spill a drop .....

In the seemingly hopeless world he lived in, the 'Kool-Aid wino' was as positive as he could be, with his Kool-Aid ceremony.
